Alfred Hitchcock(1899-1980) is the subject explored in this brief book by Dr. Michael Wood, British born professor emeritus at Princeton University., The book gives a brief account of Hitchcock's career while reviewing several of the director's best films. Reviews deal with such Hitchcock hits at the box office as: The Lodger, The Man Who Knew Too Much (both films); The Birds; Vertigo; I Confess, North by Northwest, Notorious and others. As a person who has read a vast amount on Hitchcock there was little information in this book which was new to me. However, the book many appeal best to readers who know little about the rotund director and wish to know more. The book includes a filmography and bibliography which prove helpful to those who want more insights into the tortured genius of Hitchcock.

Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) is regarded as one of the great film artists of the 20th century—not simply a director but, as the French say, an auteur, the driving force behind every aspect of the best films he made. And what films indeed! Each decade produced unexpectedly memorable works, with many of them regarded today as masterpieces. But if you expect to learn something of Hitchcock’s life, or technique and style, from Michael Wood’s ALFRED HITCHCOCK: THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, you’re going to be disappointed.Are you a particular fan of REAR WINDOW? Do you enjoy the campy melodrama of MARNIE? Curious about THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY or FRENZY? Want information about the television series? Wood acknowledges that such exists, but that is all. And when he does focus on a film—LIFE BOAT, ROPE, VERTIGO among others—he doesn’t offer anything of particular interest. His thoughts and ideas and analyses have been presented in considerably more depth and with considerably more grace in a dozen or more sources. This is a more balanced view of Hitchcock than most.

Excellent

Interesting survey of Hitchcock's life through his films. Good for insights into aspects of his growth as a suspense director but light on some of the personal aspects. May be of value to a reader interested - as I was - in the films. But the writing left me unsatisfied.

A well-written and interesting book. The author had perceptive insights to Hitchcock's career and personality. And some of his U.S. films were discussed in fascinating detail. Others, somewhat surprisingly, were barely mentioned without explanation (e.g., To Catch a Thief). But, given the book's brevity, perhaps this was unavoidable if a bit disappointing. All in all, I very much enjoyed the read.

This definitely got me interested in Hitchcock’s films and I love film but I’m not sure why it was so highly recommended.
