I loved this book as a kid. I thought it was so magical and clever. My mom actually bought it to use teaching her elementary school class and I would steal it from her stash and read it myself even though I remember it being for a younger audience than me. We also had the Christmas version of this which was just as lovely and I now own another book by the Ahlberg's - Each Peach, Pear, Plum. So you really can't go wrong with any book by these authors.I love that they are derivative of fairy tales and their characters - stories and people which kids will already be aware of. As a kid I remember it introduced the idea to me of putting these characters in new situations. That they lived lives other than just those we had read in the original stories. In other words, it taught me a way to be creative. This is 5 star material, but I took off one star because the original version of this book was smaller but the pages were made of a hardier card stock material. The book is now bigger but the pages are made of thin paper which may even be thinner than some other picture books you will find. This seems a horrible choice, since this is a great book meant to be loved for years and maybe even passed down (if your mother will part with it!). I recently found a used older version in a shop and it was in great condition but was missing one of the letters, so thus I bought my new copy here at Amazon.
I had this book for my daughter when she was a little girl and I lost track of it. Now that little girl is 35 years old and has a four-year-old daughter of her own. She remembered it from all those years ago and asked me if I could look for it. I could not find it. My theory is that it was such a beloved book and it finally just fell apart from constant use. I got online and was thrilled to see the book on Amazon. I sent it to her and my granddaughter immediately. My granddaughter absolutely loves this book. The letters themselves come in and out of envelopes on the Pages. It is so much fun for a little one to read. Or to be read to. I would highly recommend it.
Positively delightful! I ordered this from Amazon on a whim, after a fellow librarian remembered reading it as a child. Little did I expect that it would indeed be a lovely book! It follows the adventure of a jolly postman on his journey through a fairy-tale land, delivering mail to (and drinking tea with) a variety of fairy-tale characters. The best part is all the pages where the reader gets to pull out the letters or post-cards for the characters, and read them.Recommended for older children who will be careful - since the letters are removable, they could easily be lost or damaged. But the interactive quality of this book is sweet and delightful!
This is one of my favorite kids books of all time. I picked up this copy of The Jolly Postman as a holiday gift for my little cousins (Kindergarden and 3rd grade). Kindergardner didn't have the attention span to enjoy it just yet, but the 3rd grader loved it.Since I got a copy almost 30 years ago, they have made some cost cutting measures and use cheaper envelopes and letters, but it is still tons of fun to read with an imaginative young child. The book chronicles the day of a postman delivering letters to a host of popular children's story characters including the Big Bad Wolf, 3 Bears, and a Wicked Witch. At each stop, you can physically take the letter out of the book and read it. It is a totally unique and fun reading experience. Not to miss if you have an age appropriate kiddo at home!
We have an older version of this book that was sadly missing all the letters. We were all so excited to finally read what the letters said. However, we noticed the authors/editors changed the wording on the final page to "Americanize" it I suppose. The old book mentions Goldilocks putting the pound note in the pocket of her frock and they all played postman's knock (an old game). The new book says she put it in the pocket of her dress, asked the postman to the party and he answered "Yes." Sigh. The older wording had much more charm. Not sure why they feel the need to change things when it's also easy to teach children new words and words commonly used in other langues or used historically. Part of what makes the book so lovely is the other cultural references. It is still a wonderful book but people who remember the old text may be a tad disappointed in this newer version.
This is a wonderful children's book, a perfect "lap book". It won't be found in most public libraries because it has "moving parts". Inside are pockets or envelopes containing the letters written to storybook characters, from storybook characters. The reader removes the letter and reads the message such as Goldilock's letter to the three bears or Jack's letter to the Giant, etc. It is a book they'll want to read over and over and will make a happy lasting impression. I am a retired school librarian and had my own copy to read to students. They always thought it was great. Age range would be 4 years old through 2nd grade depending on the child's familiarity with the stories referenced.
Oh, my word!! My 4th graders LOVE this book! The creativity behind the idea that the reader can actually open envelopes and pull out the postcards is genius! I've used it as a mentor text in my letter writing unit, but for the rest of the year the students just get to enjoy the book -- and, boy, do they enjoy the book!! It's a class favorite, for sure!
There is so much nostalgia in these pages and envelopes and inserts. Sigh. I remember having this book read to us in elementary school by our librarian. She had laminated the inserts and I could not wait to borrow this book! The attention to detail and seeing some of my favorite characters drawn into a larger world with real-life issues were hilarious. I love the art most. It's so simple yet carefully drawn and (seemingly painted). I liked reading up on the author couple and how they won numerous awards for their works. A wonderful addition to any library. Although, perhaps it was because I was a kid but this book seems much larger than I remember it. Order a copy today!
